Connect it, so you don't have to export

⏱ 25 min6 steps

A lets Claude look things up in your stats tool while you chat, with no monthly download. You'll decide what Claude may do, check which of your tools it can connect to today, and, if you use PostHog, connect it and learn to switch it off. Not every tool has a connection yet, so the download route stays. Connection screens ask a lot of permission questions. Stopping to read them is normal, and wise.

  1. Decide what Claude may do

A connector links Claude to another service, like Gmail or PostHog. is the technical name for how it works. Once a tool is connected, Claude can use it while you chat, and what it does there is done as you.

Connectors can do two kinds of thing:

    • Read: look up numbers, pages and reports. Nothing in your tool changes.
    • Act: create, change or delete things, like a dashboard or a setting.

For your stats, Claude only needs to read. Keep it that way. Anything inside a tool, even a page title, could hold words that Claude reads as an instruction, and read-only means a stray instruction can't change anything.

Leave out tools where a mistake costs money or reaches customers, like your bank or your customer email list, until you know exactly what each permission does.

    1. Decide which of your tools you'd want Claude to read: , Google Analytics or PostHog.
MCP Short for Model Context Protocol. It's a standard way to connect Claude to other apps and services, so it can read from them or work in them. All wordsSearch Console A free Google tool that shows whether Google has found your site and what people searched to get there. All words

Nobody has reported a snag on this step yet. Getting stuck is normal. Read the step again one line at a time, and compare your screen with the video.

  2. Check which of your tools Claude can connect to

Claude's connectors directory lists the tools you can connect. Web connectors are open to every Claude plan.

When this lesson was written, in October 2026, the directory had a PostHog connector made by PostHog. It had no Search Console or Google Analytics connector from Google or from Anthropic. The directory changes, so check it yourself. If you use PostHog, don't click Connect in the directory: Step 3 connects it in a way that can only read.

    1. In the or claude.ai, open Customize, then Connectors.
    2. Click Discover to browse the directory.
    3. Search for each tool you use: Search Console, Google Analytics and PostHog.
    4. For each one you find, check who makes it.

If there's no connector for your tool, keep downloading. For Search Console, the lesson "Ask Claude about your search data" shows how. For Google Analytics, click Reports, open a report, click Share this report, then Download and Download , and attach the file to a chat the same way. If you don't use PostHog, you're done with this lesson.

Claude app Claude on your phone or computer, where you chat with it by typing. claude.ai is the same thing in a web browser. All wordsfile One document on your computer, like a letter or a photo. Files live inside folders. All wordsCSV A plain spreadsheet file with commas between the columns. Most sales, booking and job systems can download one. All words
    That's not what I see
    I can't find Customize.
Anthropic moves these menus now and then. Click the **+** button in a chat, hover over **Connectors**, and click **Manage connectors**.
I found a Search Console connector from another company.
A connector from another company passes your data through that company. This course doesn't cover those. If you want one, read who makes it and what it can do first, and keep it read-only.
  3. Connect PostHog read-only

PostHog's own connection has a read-only setting that removes every tool that could create, change or delete anything. The directory's button can't switch it on, so you add PostHog's address yourself. The address comes from PostHog's own help pages. Never paste a PostHog key, token or password into a chat.

    1. Open Customize, then Connectors.
    2. Click + Add, then Add custom connector.
    3. Name it PostHog read-only, paste this address, and click Continue:
    https://mcp.posthog.com/mcp?readonly=true

    1. Leave the sign-in settings as they are, click Continue, then Add.
    2. Click Connect if it shows, and sign in to PostHog on PostHog's own page.

Claude warns that custom connectors aren't verified by Anthropic. This one is PostHog's own server, at the address PostHog's help gives.

    You should see:

PostHog read-only shows as connected under Connectors.

    That's not what I see
It says I can only add one custom connector.
Free plans allow one. Remove one you don't use, or use the export route from Step 2.
I don't see Add custom connector.
On a Team or Enterprise plan, an owner adds custom connectors in **Organization settings**, then **Connectors**. Then you click **Connect** under **Customize**, then **Connectors**.
    I can't find Customize.
Anthropic moves these menus now and then. Click the **+** button in a chat, hover over **Connectors**, and click **Manage connectors**.
  4. Optional: ask before each look-up

You can also have Claude ask you before each time it uses PostHog. This doesn't make it any safer than the read-only address does, but you see each look-up.

    1. Open Customize, then Connectors, and click PostHog read-only.
    2. If you see Tool permissions, set PostHog's tools to Needs approval. It may list a single tool called exec.
    That's not what I see
    I can't see Tool permissions.
Anthropic's help describes them for Team and Enterprise owners, so on other plans you may not see them. That's fine. The read-only address from Step 3 is what keeps the connection safe.
  5. Ask Claude about your visitors

This asks for a few numbers you'd normally look up yourself, and has Claude say where each one came from.

    1. Start a new chat. Click the + button, hover over Connectors, and check PostHog read-only is switched on.
    2. Copy the prompt below.
Use my PostHog connector to read my website's visitor stats. Only read. Don't create, change or delete anything in PostHog. Tell me: how many visitors my site had in the last 28 days and in the 28 days before that, my five most visited pages, and where visitors came from. For every number, give the date range and say it came from PostHog. If you can't get a number, say so. Don't estimate.
    1. Paste it into the chat and send it.
    2. When Claude asks to use PostHog, click Allow. With the read-only address, PostHog's tools can only read.
    3. Check one of the numbers against PostHog's Web analytics page.
prompt What you type to Claude. A good one says what you want, how to work and what never to do. All words

    You should see:

Claude may ask to use PostHog, then answers with numbers and their date ranges, or says what it couldn't get.

    That's not what I see
Claude says it can't change anything in PostHog.
That's the read-only setting working. Ask it to read instead.
Claude says it doesn't have PostHog.
Click the **+** button, hover over **Connectors**, and check PostHog read-only is switched on for this chat. Then send the prompt again.
  6. Know how to disconnect it

You can switch PostHog off for one chat, or take the connection away completely.

    1. To switch it off for one chat, click the + button, hover over Connectors, and switch PostHog read-only off.
    2. To take it away, open Customize, then Connectors, find PostHog read-only, and click Remove or the three dots beside it. Follow the prompts to disconnect it.

If you stop using PostHog, or you're not sure what the connection is doing, disconnect it. You can connect it again any time.

    That's not what I see

Nobody has reported a snag on this step yet. Getting stuck is normal. Read the step again one line at a time, and compare your screen with the video.

Your challenge

This week, check Claude's connectors directory for the tools you use. If you use PostHog, connect it read-only and ask it one question about last month. If there's no connector for your tool, put a monthly reminder in your calendar to download your data and run the prompts from "Ask Claude about your search data".
